Behavior Modification

Even nice dogs can develop problem behavior, and even experienced dog owners can find themselves with a problem dog. Whether your dog's problem is aggression, possessiveness, territoriality, jealousy, or simply "out of control", help is available. In an in-home Behavior Consult, I will evaluate the situation, interview family members, observe the dog, and discuss with you the extent and probable causes of the problem.

You will receive some preparatory "homework" at the end of the visit, then I will provide you with a step-by-step written program to help you to safely begin modifying your dog's behavior, and get your relationship with your dog back on track.

Initial in-home Behavior Consults typically last 90 minutes to 2 hours. Phone and/or email follow-up is included at no extra charge. Follow-up sessions are scheduled as needed, and are typically 1 hour in length.

Disclaimer ~ In other words, Reality Bites

I wish I could guarantee that your dog's problem behavior will be completely cured after our visit, but such a claim is not realistic or responsible. How your dog responds to treatment depends on many factors, including genetics, early environment, current environment and how much time you have to spend with your dog. Because of those factors, it is impossible to predict exactly how any one dog will respond to treatment, but I will do all I can to maximize your chance for success. Clients usually see some improvement after the first visit.

What I can promise is that you won't get a sugarcoated assessment, nor will I give you a "one size fits all" solution. Each dog is different and each family situation is different. I have a lot of experience assessing both.

Basic Training

I also offer private, personalized obedience training lessons, in the comfort and convenience of your home - and your dog's environment. This is a good option for people with unpredictable work (and life!) schedules who find it difficult to attend regular training classes. The lessons will be tailored to your personal life…walking in your neighborhood, doorway greetings in your home, etc.

Lessons are sold in packages of 4 lessons, with day, evening, and weekend appointments available. Appointments are scheduled at your convenience, usually one lesson per week to ten days. Individual lessons last an average of 75 to 90 minutes. I also offer semiprivate instruction, in which you can get a discount for combining the training time with a friend or friends and their dogs. Call for details.

Smart Start for Puppies

A new puppy! I can't think of many things in life that can offer such a thrill of possibility or sense of potential. With that in mind, I offer a special service for the new puppy owner. Smart Start for puppies is a comprehensive in-home tutorial that details breed traits, what to expect from your pup's upcoming physical and mental developmental stages (and how to deal with them), house training, essential obedience and manners for the family dog, as well as a puppy "personality profile" and help understanding how best to work with your pup's temperament. This lesson is a fantastic way to be sure your puppy will "be all that he can be"!

The Smart Start lesson typically takes approximately 2 hours. However, I ask that you leave a little more time open, since I like to leave plenty of time to answer your questions.
