Lisa M. Lucas

Testimonials
"When I got my dog, Max, a Rottweiler mix, he was an 'alligator puppy' biting nonstop. He got worse and soon was behaving aggressively towards me and others. I took him to obedience school, where he tried to bite the instructor, after which she just turned and walked away. I was lost. Fortunately, I found Lisa Lucas and we progressed enough to be able to enroll in classes. Without Lisa, my Max would likely have had to be put down as his behavior worsened..."   Jennifer Gains, Spokane, WA

"Lisa came to us highly recommended, but we had serious doubts about whether anyone could work with our spoiled twosome. Our 5-yr old Chihuahua and 2-yr old jack Russell had been terrorizing our household for years!! Whenever anyone came to visit, the jumping and barking was turning us into hermits! After just two training lessons, both dogs responded to basic commands even when guests arrive!"

"I send a majority of my patients with behavioral issues to Lisa. She is knowledgeable, thorough and provides a very accurate assessment of the situation. Lisa is great at breaking down behavior modification plans into specific tasks for the owner to focus on. She also takes into consideration what is practical for everyday life. In addition, Lisa works closely with the veterinarian so as to help guide their treatment plan for the patient. I think so highly of Lisa that I not only refer my patients to her, I am also a client! :-)"

Private One-on-One Training
and Behavior Consultations

Even nice dogs can develop problem behavior and experienced dog owners can find themselves in need of a little help. Sometimes a personalized training plan is the answer.

Serious Behavior Concerns                          Normal (yet annoying) Behavior

Aggression towards people                           Not coming when called
Aggression towards other dogs                     Jumping Up
Fighting with pack mates                              Pulling on leash
Possessive aggression (resource guarding)    Nuisance Barking
Fence (or window) aggression                       Mauling visitors at the front door
On-Leash Reactivity                                     House Training
Separation Anxiety                                       Rude, pushy, demanding behavior
Shy and fearful behavior

What can you expect in an in-home training visit? I will evaluate the situation,  interview family members, observe the dog and discuss with you the extent and probable causes of the situation. I'll work with the dog, have you work with the dog and give you some "homework" at the end of the visit and follow up with a written training program. You will receive unlimited telephone and email support during and after training lessons.

I offer a few training packages, but the number of lessons required will depend on your particular situation. Problems can sometimes be addressed in one visit

it too. The first trip out we had the most
hilarious walk until he got used to it :) It is
very nice to use and he responds nicely with
it. Just gentle tugs and he drops right back."

Behavior Modification
One size does NOT fit all. The underlying motivation for your dog's behavior matters...and most "bad" behavior is not about dominance. Good training plans factor in the dog's personality (or is that canine-ality?), temperament, early social experiences and whether or not the dog is bossy, fearful, anxious, stressed, and/or confused about his job and your expectations. Each training and behavior modification plan is custom designed for your dog and your personal situation. I have only one constant in my work with behaviorally challenged dogs:

I never use electric training collars or prong-collar corrections for ANY aggression based in anxiety, confusion, stress or fear. And that covers about 99.99% of all aggression. Am I a softy? No.  I establish non-negotiable boundaries for the dog using language and motivators that makes sense to the dog and work within the the natural laws of learning and behavior....and I teach you how to do the same!

Veterinary Involvement in Behavioral Issues
Many behavioral problems can be caused or worsened by physical health issues, such as chronic pain and hormone imbalances. If your dog has a sudden change in behavior the first place to start is with your veterinarian, where he or she can run blood tests as part of an overall exam.
